Six candidates are set to battle it out in the upcoming Plaistow South by-election.
The vote, which is to take place on Thursday 18 September, was triggered by the recent death of Labour councillor Neil Wilson, who had served the people of Plaistow for 31 years.
Local resident Ash Singh will have the task of keeping the seat in Labour's hands.
He describes himself as a "community activist", and said he "founded an international social enterprise that trains young people to use technology for good".
Singh is a co-director of Compost Newham, a voluntary sector support hub, and said he was "determined to use my experience to help young people thrive and deliver quality public services for our community".
The Conservative candidate is Rois Miah, chairman of the party's West Ham and Beckton branch.
In a letter to residents, he wrote: "I know how difficult things have been recently, and this Labour council, supported by the Greens and Newham Independents, have done nothing to make our area safer, cleaner or more affordable for local residents or small businesses."
He added: "I will be the strong voice that stands up for all local residents and small businesses, to put more police on our streets, stop the littering and fly-tipping that blights our area and stop the wasteful spending that we are paying for."
Newham Independents have announced MD Nazrul Islam as their hopeful.
His campaign bumf says he has been a Plaistow resident for 16 years, and that he is a community worker "experienced in the housing sector". He also volunteers at a food bank.
Newham Greens have listed Nic Motte as their candidate, but the party does not appear to have made any formal announcement at time of writing.
The Liberal Democrats are fielding project manager Sheree Miller, who stood in the 2022 local elections in Plaistow South, finishing last with 279 votes.
According to a statement on whocanivotefor.co.uk, Miller "has been active in the local community campaigning against fly-tipping" and a "champion for the rights of EU citizens during the turmoil caused by Brexit".
Reform UK is putting forward Lazar Monu, a site manager at construction specialist Reds10, as its entrant.
A recent post on one of Reform's social media channels says the party's data shows "multiple seats can be won in Newham, including the upcoming by-election (Plaistow South 18 Sept)".
Following a recent door-knocking session, the chairman of the party's Newham and Tower Hamlets branch, Lee Nallalingham, posted on Facebook: "One thing’s certain — there’s no love for Labour in Plaistow South."
