A by-election in Plaistow South will take place on Thursday 18 September following the death of Labour ward councillor Neil Wilson.
Wilson, who was also the cabinet member for health and adult social care, died in July.
He had served as a councillor in Plaistow for 31 years.
Nominations for candidates hoping to fill the vacant seat are now open, with the deadline for submissions at 4pm on Thursday 21 August.
Residents must register to vote by midnight on Tuesday 2 September 2025, and applications can be submitted online at gov.uk/registertovote.
Anyone wanting to vote by post has until 5pm on Wednesday 3 September to register, and the deadline for registering for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 10 September.
Four polling stations will open on 18 September from 7am until 10pm, with their locations to be announced on 10 September.
Voters must bring a valid photo ID to the polling station in order to cast their ballot, with the following forms of ID deemed acceptable:
- Passport
- Driving licence (including provisional license)
- Blue badge
- Certain concessionary travel cards
- Identity card with PASS mark (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
- Biometric Immigration document
- Defence identity card
- Certain national identity cards
